Wayne Rooney
In all likelihood Rooney will become England's greatest international goalscorer today with some easy fish to shoot in the San Marino barrel.
He has 48 goals in 105 games and the rest of the top 5 are Sir Bobby Charlton 49 in 106, Gary Lineker 48 in 80, Jimmy Greaves 44 in 57 & Michael Owen 40 in 89.

He appears a DIVISIVE figure for some reason.
Perhaps because his international goals include 2 vs Brazil & 1 against each of Holland, Argentina & Uruguay.

The rest are against
5 Croatia
4 San Marino Slovenia
3 Kazakhstan Switzerland
2 Belarus Bulgaria Denmark Estonia Iceland Montenegro Poland Scotland Slovakia
1 Ecuador Liechtenstein Lithuania Norway Russia Ukraine

Where do you rank him amongst that top 5?

Greaves's 44 in 57 is phenomenal

Re: Wayne Rooney
Don't rate him... was talking to a Man U fan last week who is very worried that Rooney is their only striker (bar the new kid)... hasn't scored since October for United apparently.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Did we not play shit teams when Bobby was about then?

What's the excuse for the Man Utd record that he's bound to smash as well then?

An outstanding footballer good enough to play for any side in the world. Falls short of Messi and Ronaldo, but through history there isn't many that don't.

The best player of our generation. Someone that the whole country it seems would rather slag off than do well.

It's sad but that is your average football fan today.

Re: Wayne Rooney
If he thinks Rooney hasn't scored since October then he isn't much of a fan.

Pretty sure he got 3 goals to qualify them for the Champions League for a start.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Everyone says that Rooney has had it easier and therefore his goals record doesn't mean as much as Sir Bobbys but 9 of Charltons goals came against the USA and Luxembourg who were the minnows of the day.

I personally think Wayne is a dick but credit to him for scoring the goals he has.

Re: Wayne Rooney
GOOD player but not WORLD CLASS. Hasn't done ANYTHING against REAL opposition. Breaking the record whilst playing against shite teams is no big deal although you can only beat what is put in front of you. Let's see if he can play well against the big guns in Euro 2016 - I doubt he can

Re: Wayne Rooney
Bushey, you are kind of right but the big issue that everyone has with shrek is that he hasn't turned up at the major tournaments and this is why he gets a hard time from England fans imo

Re: Wayne Rooney
Can't help not liking him Bushey... plently that I do, just somryhing about Rooney!

Can 't argue with his scoring record but he never does it in the big games when needed and never looks like doing it either!!

Not fit to lace Lineker's boots.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Perhaps it was PL goals he was going on about... I was trying not to listen!

Re: Wayne Rooney
Who has turned up at a big tournament though mate (from England in recent years)?

We had a lot of other what I would class as 'World Class' (Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard) and they didn't do much either.

I know the term World Class is up for debate... But I use it to describe a player that could play for most teams in the world in his prime. I think all of the above could have graced the worlds best teams.

Re: Wayne Rooney
I don't think Rooney is helped by the fact that he is marketed beyond his abilities.... laughable that he was bracketed with Messi and Ronaldo (on FIFA merchandise etc..) and he fails to live up to the hype.

Not really his fault I suppose.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Not comparable in my eyes... think England have far easier games now compared to years gone past... Greavsies records re goals per games ratio will probably never be beaten... Charlton was a midfielder .... and Lineker done it at the absolute highest level TWICE (he also put in one of the finest performances ever by a Englishman by scoring all 4 goals against Spain... below)... in fact I would put Shearer & Owen ahead of Rooney... but if he breaks the record well done him but greatest ever?? Not a chance....

Re: Wayne Rooney
He's a very good player on his day, as we've seen at Upton Park.... and I hope he breaks the record in style.

But....he was truly abysmal in South Africa. That's no exaggeration there. Touch of an elephant and struggled to trap it and pass it. (Probably thanks to the media having a sex scandal over his head but then again, that was HIS own doing)
One of the statistics at the time measured him as one of the worst players in the whole World Cup.

He's had a tag as the next Pele, I never saw Pele, so if someone can say that's exactly what he's like then I don't think I missed anything there. A striker that doesn't want to be in that position. A deep forward that doesn't create much.

It's just a shame we've had this media hysterical insistence he is the next Pele and a world great, because it dampens his career achievements for me.

The story from the coach at Man Utd also disappoints me as an England fan, Ronaldo wasn't in the same class as Rooney but put in the graft in the gym and had the determination to become a great. Rooney went home after training.

Personally I'd rather Shearer/Lineker up front who I think were deadly. And I'd rather Gazza playing in behind than Rooney.

Still, it's a great achievement and on his day he can be brilliant in flashes. It's just a shame he never had a consistent brilliant level.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Not his fault he was born in the era where money has flooded the game and when the game is pretty much non contact when compared to the time for example when England actually won the World Cup or 1970 World Cup. You can only wonder how the great players of the past would fare in the modern game.

Great player in today's game but this is not a great era...

The golden generation have flopped in every international tournament that mattered.

i didn't mind the granny shagging cunt until he decided to slag off the England fans in South Africa. that put me off him for life, not that him or his syrup/weave gives a shit

Re: Wayne Rooney
Also, I think football is better now (no back passes, offside rules), and is a better standard at international level than Illunga's old man going to a World Cup without knowing the rules.
No question about that.

Bobby Charlton being a midfielder makes his tally all the more special.

Re: Wayne Rooney
Very Inconsistent when playing in finals but he is definitely England's top man since he came into the national side as a young man.

His biggest problem is being in a team that can qualify easily but cannot perform well in the big games in the finals, England have been woeful for far too long.

I would put him ahead of Lineker and Owen easily 1)Greaves 2) Charlton 3) Rooney

Re: Wayne Rooney
I've said on here before, he has had a big injury in the build up to literally every tournament he has played in for England. Look it up, it's easy to find out about all of them. He has gone to most tournaments properly undercooked, and burdens the blame every time because the whole team seems to freeze.

When he is fit, in say qualifying, he always turns up for England. Do those games not matter?

And to say he isn't world class, and doesn't do it in big games. Scoring a goal against Barcelona in a Champions League FINAL is not a big game then? Ok, I've learnt something new today.

Fucking incredible how eager people are to slag him off. Actually, it's not incredible, it's weird. He'll be the first man to score 50 goals for England, and he's not 30 yet. AVERAGE.
